There’s a lot going on right now.
News cycles move fast, and opinions are loud. What can happen is, you can find yourself pulled into it - reacting, worrying, thinking… and slowly disconnecting.
Not just from the world, but from yourself and from humanity.
That’s the real problem.
Because when you disconnect from yourself, everything changes:
- Your thinking gets clouded
- Your emotions ramp up
- You move into fear instead of clarity
- You react instead of respond
This is where we can go into "scarcity" mode, living in a reactive state.
The Shift Most People Miss
When we feel overwhelmed, we usually try to think our way out of it.
We scroll, we analyse and we react. But overwhelm isn’t solved in the mind.
It’s solved by coming back into the present. And that’s where this simple exercise comes in.
The 5-Minute Reconnection Exercise
This is something I stumbled across that genuinely surprised me with how powerful it is.
It’s simple.
And it works.
If you can, go somewhere outside - a garden, a park, somewhere you like.
Then do this:
1. Isolate One Sense
Pick one of your five senses and focus only on that.
Let’s say sight.
Block out the others as best you can:
- Cover your ears
- Pause your breathing for a moment
- Remove distractions
Then just… observe.
Really observe.
2. Notice What You Normally Miss
When you isolate one sense, something interesting happens.
You start to see more.
You notice:
- The way light hits a leaf
- The movement of small insects
- Tiny details you would normally ignore
It’s like the world sharpens.
3. Rotate Through Your Senses
Now try the same with:
- Touch → feel the air, the warmth, the textures
- Sound → listen deeply, without distraction
- Smell → subtle, but powerful when you focus
Each time, you’re pulling yourself out of your head… and back into your body.
What Happens When You Do This
Something shifts.
Your thoughts quiet down, your breathing slows and you start to notice the peace and quiet - you are in the present.
And from that place:
- Problems don’t feel as overwhelming
- You gain perspective
- You move out of fear
- You feel more in control
You realise something important:
You don’t have to stay in that overwhelmed state AND you can control how you feel.
Why This Matters
When we stay disconnected, we become reactive.
We let external things dictate:
- How we feel
- How we think
- How we act
But when you reconnect, even for a few minutes - you take that control back.
You move from:
Fear → to Presence
Scarcity → to Abundance
Reaction → to Choice
Give It a Go
Take 5 minutes today.
That’s it.
Try the exercise.
See what you notice.
See how you feel.
And more importantly…
Notice the difference.
I’d love to hear how you go with it.
