Let’s be honest — most business owners overthink marketing. They either cringe at the thought of it (the “ick” factor) or freeze completely, not knowing what to say or do.
But what if marketing didn’t have to feel awkward or forced?
What if the secret to great marketing, and to feeling confident on camera, was simply talking to a real person?
That’s exactly what changed everything for me.
When I stopped thinking about “target audiences” and made-up “ideal client avatars,” I started connecting with real humans again.
Now, whenever I create a video, write an email, or even plan a campaign, I imagine I am talking to a real person, someone with a real problem I can genuinely solve.
Think about it.
When I speak to an authentic about what they do or how they help people, they are a fountain of wisdom, and have no problems in giving advice, opinion or directions. Yet in front of a camera or writing a sales page, they don't know what to say.
So if you were to imagine the scene above, sitting across from a friend or client, you would use the right language (their language), and you would speak with love and confidence for them.
That’s the same energy you want to bring into your videos, emails and posts.
When you picture a real person on the other side of that camera or screen, your words flow differently. You stop “performing” and start connecting. And people feel that.
It’s why unscripted, natural videos perform so well — they show the real you. And in a world full of polished influencers, real stands out.
Because here’s the truth:
People will buy into you before they buy from you.
So next time you hit record or sit down to write, imagine you’re talking to one person who needs what you offer. Speak to their feelings. Speak to their problems. Help them feel seen.
That’s not just good marketing.
That’s authentic marketing.
Takeaway for Today
- Stop worrying about your “avatar” — picture a real person instead.
- Talk about a feeling or problem you know your audience faces.
- Create or write like you’re having a genuine conversation.
- Remember: natural beats perfect every time.
