Overcoming Video Fear in 3 Simple Steps

If the idea of pressing “record” gives you cold sweats, you’re not alone. For many authentic coaches, therapists, authors, and online biz owners, video and video marketing often brings up resistance.

The problem. Video remains one of the most powerful ways to connect, inspire, and grow your reach. So how do you bridge the gap between panic and pressing record?

Overcoming Video Anxiety

In this episode, I walk you through a simple but transformative process to explore and overcome your resistance to video.

We’re not talking about forcing yourself to be loud, slick, or salesy. This is about uncovering the stories you’re carrying that might be holding you back - cultural baggage, fear of judgment, past criticisms, or that inner voice whispering “who do you think you are?”

Here are the steps:

  • Become the observer. Notice what you feel when you imagine turning on the camera. Fear? Nerves? Shame? Resistance?
  • Ask yourself why you feel that way. Is it fear of judgment? Memories of being told not to “show off”? A harsh inner critic?
  • Say it out loud—or better yet, record yourself saying it. Seriously, talk it through on video (no one has to see it). Put it in our private Facebook group if you want support.

Once you name the feeling and the story behind it, it often loses its grip. This isn't fluff—it’s practical mindset work that frees you up to show up as yourself.

Because here’s the thing: I’ve seen it again and again. The moment someone drops the performance mask and just talks—passionately, honestly—that is when their magic comes through. That’s when clients connect. That’s when the right people lean in.

So if you’ve been stuck behind the scenes, paralyzed by video fear, try this exercise. And stay tuned—we’ve got more coming to help you plan and create content that builds your authority, promotes your work, and still feels 100% like you.

Because we need more real humans in this space. And the camera? It just wants to meet the real you.

  1. Hi John – this really hit home for me. When I did this exercise, I def have a few people in the room (mainly people I'm close to you who aren't used to seeing me in my "professional mode". It kinda feels weird. I'm going to delve into that a little more – and why that is uncomfortable for me.

You mention the free group – where is that?
