Be Yourself on Camera: 4 Easy Tips to Show Up Naturally

If you’ve ever stared into the black hole of your phone’s camera and thought, “Ugh. I don’t want to come across like those cringey online marketers or influencers,” you’re not alone.

A lot of authentic coaches, therapists, authors, service-based business owners do not love the spotlight. They don't want to appear fake or have to be a certain type of person, but they do want to connect with real people, grow their audience, and share their message in a way that feels aligned.

So how do you show up on video without pretending to be someone you're not?

Here are four simple tips to help you relax, be yourself, and actually enjoy the process.

1. Start by Practicing (Privately)

No pressure. No one’s watching. Just get used to hitting the record button and talking. Choose a topic you care about, and treat it like a mini Toastmasters session. You don’t even have to watch the replay. The point is to get comfortable hearing your own voice, expressing your thoughts out loud, and playing with how you show up.

2. Talk to a Person, Not a Lens

That camera can feel cold and robotic. But you’re not really talking to a camera—you’re talking to someone. Picture your ideal client, a person you already enjoy working with, and speak directly to them. This mental shift can completely change your tone and help you come across more naturally.

3. Forget Perfect - Just Pause and Restart

Spoiler alert: even the pros don’t get it right in one take. Movies aren’t filmed in one go, and your videos don’t need to be either. Keep the camera rolling, pause when needed, restart from a sentence you like, and keep going. Then chop out the bits you don’t want later.

This is a game-changer if you’re working off notes or tend to go off on tangents (guilty). Say your piece, glance at your notes, and jump back in. The pressure’s off.

4. Relax—No One Sees the Drafts

You’re in control. If it’s rubbish, delete it. You can record 20 versions and only publish the one you like. So have fun with it. Laugh at yourself. Be a little messy if that’s your vibe. Because guess what? That’s what people relate to.

Why This Matters More Than Ever

We’re living in a world of mega influencers and polished content, but real connection still matters. When someone sees you and gets your vibe, your energy, your way of showing up, they see the type of person you are.  That’s often the deciding factor, especially for high-value services like coaching or therapy.

People don’t just buy what you do—they buy who they trust.

So if you’re feeling hesitant about video, remember: the world doesn’t need more perfect. It needs more real. And that’s your superpower.
